Here we go!

The purpose of this blog is to share my experiences creating a hybrid STEAM lab / Maker Space at my elementary school site. My goal is to help other teachers embark on this journey and learn from my research, experiences, and mistakes.

I will be working with my principal and other teachers at my site to fundraise, plan, and create an environment that promotes the 4 C's, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication.
The first challenge at my school site is that we do not have a vacant room that can be converted. Our hope is to use carts and mobile lockboxes so that materials can be easily checked out and brought into classrooms. Our library does have an adjacent space with a storage closet and tables and chairs, but the librarian teaches classes in this space two full days of the week.

My hope is that this blog will be a place where teachers can get ideas and resources on how to implement some of the new robotics and computer gadgets in such a way that they are enhancing the curriculum and content standards that we are required to teach. Some of the products I will be exploring include SPHERO, Dash & Dot, LittleBits, Makey Makey, 3D Printers, Osmo, and Ozobots.

My school serves approximately 500 K-5 grade students, including general education and a full continuum of SDC classes. I want all of these students to have access and experience with these tools and I want the teachers to feel comfortable using them. Please share your experiences, ideas, and resources so that we can spread the awesome! Our kids deserve it.
This is going to be bumpy, but awesome ride!
